Round Barn

The concept of the Round Barn originated in New England in the early 18th century and was utilized in some of the Shaker communities, the theory being that the central silo could feed all the cattle facing the middle. Few round barns have survived (have heard tell that some silly cows couldn't find their stall and kept traveling in circles) but the beauty and romance of the device remains in our few precious remaining examples.

This autumn landscape has the rare round barn as its focal point, and harvest activities going on all around: cows and pigs watering, sheep enjoying the last of the summer's pasture in distant meadows, Mr. Farmer with his pitchfork en route to muck out the stalls while the animals are outside enjoying one of the last balmy days of late autumn. The straw is cut and piled in ricks, and wee Mary and her mum are feeding the chickens and collecting the booty: fresh eggs.

THE ROUND BARN, 18"x22", edition of 500, $45.00
