The Fireman's Picnic The old firehouse is central to this inviting re-creation of
the traditional Fireman's Picnic, held to raise funds for the fire wagons, feed
for the horses who pulled them, and wages for the men who risked their lives to
be on call for the needs of their community. So much fun has been painted into
this idyllic summer scene: a sack race, a horseshoe tournament, the bake sale,
yaketty-yaks at the picnic tables, sweethearts on picnic blankets, a small brass
band tooting away, and of course the young lads admiring the impressive fire
equipment as a Fire Man explains how it all should work.
